B's First BIG DAY OUT, Monday 28th January, 2002
Well, i didn't really know what to expect from the big day out, and i knew that i was dressed, well, normal in my opinion, but to "them" (i,e. the weirdo big day outters) i think i would have been considered conservative, or the tagger alonger....but hey...who cares? I was there and was ther with Em, [O-O], Stacey and Decay!
[insert b's frustration here: this whole not using enter bizzo is really quite annoying]
So us girls waited ever so patiently at [O-O]'s house and much to my dismay, when i was looking at the
personalised b's big day out timetable
(courtesy of [O-O]) i discovered that Grinspoonwasn't on there! Agrahhh...so i fixed it (in pen)...but even more to my dismay...it created more clashes...and i wasn't even seeing as many bands as the others...but are well.....
so we arrived to the venue, waited in queues....survived the bag searches (ok, so they didn't find the pills, bong and bottle of vodka i had hidden in my bag.....just joking!) and yes, just when you thought you were in we noted that they didn't rip our tix and yep, you guessed it, we had to wait in another queue...all while remembering on our ticket it did say "7. Patience is a Virtue"..which, i might add, is a virture i don't have.
So, i collected my free bottle of water, and showbag and followed the others, as i had to kill about three hours before the first band i wanted to see was on. So i tagged and we saw a lil' of Magic Dirt with the lead singer trying to break her guitar at the end of the set, which she failed at, we took a squizz at the tshirts...me purchasing a grinspoon one and had lunch at a very pricey KFC.
So, pretty much, Em and I went to the boiler room to see GT, and about 10 minutes after the change over, we decided that the guy mixing the records is groove terminator [i swear they didn't introduce him] so we danced a bit and then headed off to see Something for Kate - the first of my clashes. I like Something for Kate, but i don't think the Big Day Out was intimate enough for them....somewhere like, Cold Live at the Chapel may have been better.....the huge arena of the showgrounds just didn't seem to cut it....
I also scooted off to see Kosheenand scaddadled between Kosheen and Grinspoon (the middle of my clash). It was lucky(?) i smelt real strong grass being smoked in boiler room while enjoying kosheen coz i ducked out and good grinspoon songs were playing....but low and behold, i had missed Just Ace....are well....
Em and i caught the end of spiderbait, but the girls voice does not carry well.....then it was time to line up for GARBAGE . So we waited whilst rememering "Patience is a Virtue" to get into the D barrier zone, listening to regugitator. They were quite good! I got in first, yay for me! Em and i got up real close for garbage, moshed - well, jumped up and down occasionally (not really the true definitiaon of moshing). Garbage so totally rocked man. They opened up with "Push It" and played cool songs and did a cover of Kylie's "Can't get you out of my head". I think i was the only one who knew the words and Melboune didn't seem very enthuastic about that cover....but i liked it...and garbage were good...well, i thought so anyway!!! They played for under an hour which was disappointing, but i wasn't all that fussed, as b and e were going to see them the next night at the metro nightclub. So after garbage we saw a bit of silverchair, daniel johns had the same shirt from the Gold Coast Big Day Out...b and e watched too much channel V that week. Plus, his bum fluff didn't seem to have grown all that much more....
We then saw a bit of john butler trio where i decided to take a nap, grabbed some food, and saw some of Peaches (in more ways than one!). Then e and b felt it was time to head towards the boiler room in order to get a great spot for Basement Jaxx. We sat outside the boiler room listening to the last song from New Order drinking red bull. Anyway, we headed to the front for basement jaxx in the boiler room (which was an addictive room for b with the dobechee dobechee music) and b and e had a blast! Basement Jaxx were really great! They had dancers and live singers (i mean, looking at two DJ's would be pretty boring right?) and they sang "where's your head at?" live which totally brought the house down! The only dumb thing was the fake encore. I mean, if you are going to have an encore, at least make it look real...don't finish 30 minutes before you are supposed too, don't conviently *forget* to play some of your really great hits.....so anyway, they came back on for their fake encore and sang Bingo Bango amongst some others....i still don't see the point of a fake encore...but still, we loved basement jaxx! They rocked too!
Then the lights came on and it was the end of B's first Big Day Out and time to find decay and [O-O] in our meeting spot.....which well, was quite conveniently located near some sprinkler showers....so we, ok, b grabbed e and we ran under the sprinker (we were sweaty, and me sunburnt...sunscreen you ask? umm..yeah...not happening..don't beleive in it!) while [O-O] took a pic.
So off we headed home, smelly, sweaty and dirty.....discussing our experiences at the Big Day Out.
Oh, i haven't mentioned the weird people we saw...well, the usual..you know the ones...with all the body peircing, bad op shop old clothes, dreads, leg warmers, a couple dressed up as a bloddied bride and groom, whom [O-O] knows, fishnet stocking, chains (could they be classified as weapons?)..boys with nail polish, bad haircuts..i even saw this chic who shaved her legs but not her underarms...i don't get that...thought it was all or none???
anyway, that is the end of a very comprehensive review, i am quite impressed with my efforts, i did linky things and a description of linky things when you put your mouse over it - although i don't know if that works?? I also (almost)
:""""""""""""""""""""""""""""(
coz i lost half of my post and had to do it again!
So stay tuned for b's review of b's and e's adventures at Garbage and Vibes on a Summers Day...
Can they survive three concerts in one week.....and each other....?
